BEARER’S BLOOD

Seraphim threw Amal onto the bed. “Take your clothes off,” he said.

Amal sat up and scrambled backward. “Sir, I offer you my most humble apologies, but I’ve decided this is an inappropriate use of my resources.”

He frowned. “What are you talking about, girl?”

“I’ve changed my mind.”

“I’ve already paid. If it’s money you want, I can offer you further remuneration for your services. I understand a large percentage of the fee goes to your handlers, so this coin is to be exchanged between you and me. It shall be our secret.” He winked.

“Oh no, sir, I couldn’t take your money. That’s just it, you see, I’m not a...a...”

“A whore?”

“Not that there’s anything wrong with that, sir, I mean Prunella is a good person, and I’m not judging or saying I’m better than her. The gist of it is, I just don’t think my heart and soul are in it.”

Shut her up! She’s driving me mad!

“Take your clothes off.”

“I have to go, sir.”

Seraphim waggled a finger. “You amuse me. I like you. Stay.” He removed the phallus trinket from around his neck and held it out. “Give me your hand. Go on. Hold it out!”

Amal closed her eyes and stretched out her hand. Seraphim let the trinket fall into her palm. She opened her eyes and stared at the pendant, her brows coming together.

“There. I dare say that’s the first time you’ve held a prick in your hand. Not so bad is it? Now, let’s graduate to the real thing.”

Amal dropped the amulet onto the bed. “I must go.”

Suddenly, he was on her, pushing her back, his jet-black hair covering her face, mingling with her own black hair, suffocating her.

The door exploded inwards. Michael Alaine stood there. “Get off her!”

“Leave or die!” Seraphim shouted and jumped lithely from the bed. He stopped, staring hard in recognition and puzzlement. “Alaine? What are you doing here?”

“Sergeant Kirk?” Michael looked at Amal. “Are you all right?” He held out his hand. “Come. Let’s go.”

Pig, the metal, get it!

Seraphim eyed his amulet on the bed and lunged, but Michael had him by the hair before he could lay hands on it and threw him across the room. “Leave her alone!”

Seraphim got to his feet and raised his hands in a gesture of non-confrontation, his scalp stinging. “I was simply reaching for my necklace.” He cocked his head and frowned at the intruder. “What’s happened to you, Michael? Have you gone mad?”

“And you, Archibald? Are you now just another rapist and murderer?”

He knows! He knows!

“I’m simply engaging the services of a prostitute. Hardly a criminal offense.”

“You’re a killer. I can see it in your eyes. Just like the others.” Michael looked around the room, his fists clenched. “This is my fault,” he mumbled. He stared at Seraphim, with eyes wide, almost pleading. “It’s the trinkets, can’t you see?”

“I don’t know what you’re talking about.”

“They’re rotting us from the inside out!”

They all know! This is the second one hunting you down! You should have killed Lewis! You bring them all down on us!

Seraphim silently cursed the voice in his head.
